It’s a great honor to serve as board member for the Live Oak school district. I was once a Live Oak school kid who walked the halls of Shoreline middle school ( class of 2017!!). Throughout my educational career as an adolescent I felt disconnected with the adults in my education who had the power to make change. This motivated me to apply myself to engage in student leadership with the County Office of Education during my high school years. What I learned in my experiences in becoming a youth leader was that the youth has so much potential to make progress. However, there is an accessibility issue when it comes to listening to student voices. When we hear students we are hearing their stories, their circumstances adults need to do more for the youth. I want to do more for the youth in Live Oak because not long ago I was in their position. I want to ensure that the kids at Live Oak know that there is a board member who sees them as kids before students. This is important to me as a leader because when we do this we are putting humanity first. Students need to feel cared for in order to be civically engaged in their education. Civic engagement implies that students know how to contribute to the direction their education is going. I invite you students at Live Oak to meet your school board members because we are here to serve you.
