After School "Kid Care" Program

About the After School Program

The Live Oak School District-Child Development Program offers an After School Child Care Program for K-5 students who attend Live Oak, Del Mar and Green Acres Elementary Schools. This program operates a year round program September through June, (which includes a summer camp in July and August). The District provides free and low cost tuition to families who are eligible (based on the families’ income and the need for child care). Families can also sign up for care with standard tuition fees. We offer 2, 3 or 5 day per week participation in the program. The California Department Of Education, Child Development Division (CDD), Santa Cruz County Human Resource Agency (HRA) & The Santa Cruz County Voucher Project, as well as family tuition fees provide the funding for our program.
The After School Program implements the Desired Results Evaluation system to ensure program quality. The staff interview, observe and assess students in key areas. The 2 desired results domains to which all CDE-funded child care and development programs are expected to contribute are:
Domain 1: Self and Social Development
Domain 2: Health
There are 13 measures that the after school staff use to observe and assess our after school students. The measures are specific to each domain.

The program offers a wide variety of opportunities for children to participate in activities such as: dance, cooking, art, computers, Tae Kwon Do, and physical fitness. In addition, we offer many community field trips to local beaches, libraries, museums, the Simpkins Swim Center, local parks, The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (bowling & miniature golf), Golf-Land Waterslides, Monterey Bay Aquarium and much more.

Our Outstanding Staff

The Child Development After School Program staff is made up of a team of Site Supervisors, Master Teachers, and Classroom Assistants. Each position title requires a specific level of education and experience working with young children in a classroom setting. At each elementary school site, district staffs a Site Supervisor, Master Teachers and several part-time assistants. We feel very strongly that low teacher-child ratios are critical for providing an effective program.

Our staff participates in extensive training in the areas of Health & Safety, Curriculum Development & Assessment, and Principals of Working with School Age Children, and Diversity in the Classroom, and Positive Discipline.
