Monterey Bay Economic Partnership and the Santa Cruz Warriors Announce the MBEP Scholars Program (Based on Student Attendance)
Marina, CA (October 25, 2016) The Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) and the Santa Cruz Warriors are launching MBEP Scholars, a program to incent school attendance at local elementary and middle schools. Partnering with the Santa Cruz Warriors and local school districts, including Santa Cruz City Schools, Live Oak School District, and Soquel Union Elementary School District, MBEP’s program provides incentives in the form of Santa Cruz Warriors tickets to K-8 students who consistently demonstrate or improve school attendance.

Students who meet attendance goals within participating schools will now have the opportunity to attend Santa Cruz Warriors games. At each home game, the Warriors will be recognizing the MBEP Scholars and acknowledging their achievement. Promoting academic success starts at home, which is why each student will be able to bring one family member to accompany her or him to the game.

Data shows that frequent absences are linked to negative school outcomes, including higher dropout rates and lower test scores, which can have lifelong effects on academic achievement and employment. "MBEP is committed to a thriving region for all residents, and that starts with our youth," said Bud Colligan, Co-Chair of MBEP. "We are excited to be partnering with local school districts and helping students achieve their highest potential."

“Missing school clearly means missing important learning opportunities. The burden of catching up is not always easy, and can contribute to poor self-esteem. By attending school regularly, students develop the habit of ‘staying engaged’ and this habit serves them well as they move forward in their lives,” said Tamra Taylor, Superintendent of the Live Oak School District.

“We are thrilled to partner with MBEP to support and complement the incredible work of our local school administrators and teachers to ensure academic success for our youth,” said Warriors President, Chris Murphy. “This partnership will further our mission to guide our local students in any way possible to promote a positive academic journey.”
